Laced Down

Well, I got through an extremely rough week, capped off by a truly challenging day on Saturday. I'm still kind of reeling from it all, to be honest... This week, Bob is away on business, and while I'll miss him terribly, it does mean I have the apartment to myself! I have big plans: mega-cleaning, rearranging the living room (with the purpose of having a functional indoor photo location), eating too many Totino's pizzas (a guilty pleasure that lingers from my single days), hem and hang my bedroom curtains (finally), and - if at all possible - start decorating for the holidays! We leave for Boston on Saturday to spend Thanksgiving with Bob's family, so if I'm going to decorate, it'll have to be sooner rather than later. I just can't believe the holidays are almost here again!

"Fiona" Dress - LucieLu / Denim jacket - Theory (eBayed) / Grey tights - LOFT (?) / Flats - LOFT

I thought I'd try dressing down this lace dress today, so I started with a denim jacket. Tights were a must, but they made my shoe choices more difficult. I didn't want to wear boots, and I toyed with wearing sandals, but I was totally self-conscious about the tights-sandals combo, regardless of how popular it currently seems to be. So I opted for my trusty flats. Between the jacket and sandals, I think I succeeded in putting together a pretty casual look.

Ring - Banana Republic / Ginko and Gunmetal necklace - chrdesigns on Etsy / Earrings - Lane Bryant

And yes, you sure have seen a few versions of this dress before: the "Amelia" in grey and white and the "Piper" in black and pink with cream embellishments. I love the lace overlay, the straight skirt that hits perfectly below my knee, and the pretty embellishments that make each dress unique. I continue to experiment with more ways to wear them!

Cold Snap

And just like that, it's winter. The trench coat has been replaced by the winter coat, snow flakes have been rumored, and outdoor pictures no longer seem practical.

Mustard cardigan - Cable & Gauge (via TJ Maxx) / Lace top - LOFT / Tweed skirt - Lane Bryant

I won't wax poetic about that because I'm truly not ready. Let me just get past Thanksgiving, okay? Really, let me just get through this week! I'm doing pretty well with my outfit list, though. Surprisingly, this outfit had plunged to the bottom of the list, but I thought I'd nudge it back up a few notches and wear it sooner than later. When I first conceived of it, I hadn't chosen what accessories I'd wear, so it remained a somewhat drab combination of darker colors. Don't get me wrong - I love the mix of patterns between the lace of the top and the tweed of the skirt, but I knew I needed something more.

Ring & Earrings - Banana Republic / Necklace - Le Mode Accessories

Purple. Purple is always the answer. My low-heeled purple-textured pumps are a great complement to the yellow (and are much easier for all the running around I had to do), and this colorful tiered beaded necklace offers just the right punch of color at the neckline. I never thought I'd wear such a bold statement necklace when I already had enough embellishment in the top, but this is just another example of how I'm learning to expand my layering skills!

Happy Friday, everyone! (And happy day of 11s!) I'm working all weekend, but I'll get through. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Coral Relief

I honestly don't know how to begin this post with something other than "Holy moly stripes are neat" or "Stripes! Yahoo!" So, there. I think maybe, just maybe, I have enough of them now. No promises, though.

Black cardigan - LOFT / Striped top - Dorothy Perkins / Beige wide-leg pants - NY&Co.

To continue my week of "five easy pieces" I thought I'd go with pants today. I'm not always a lover of pants because I have such a hard time getting a good fit, but once in a while I can at least get them to photograph well. I figured these beige wide-leg basics would be a great pairing with my new charcoal striped goodness from Dorothy Perkins. (And they just launched their new US site, too!) Throw on a cardigan and a colorful belt and I've got a stripetacular version of a pretty classic ensemble.

Have any of you checked out Dorothy Perkins yet? I've heard good things from other bloggers, so I thought I'd give them a try with some casual pieces for my first go-round. (I pretty much entered "stripe" in the search bar and found this top. It's best to just cut to the chase, you know?) Also got the black & white version and a few cozy infinity scarves. (Yes, I have a problem.) I'm excited that they now have a US site, which tempts encourages me to try out a few other items. Any suggestions?

Felicitous 100

I came across this outfit yesterday and was reminded that I needed to find another way to wear this amazingly unique top of mine. So I thought I'd go easy (and I definitely need easy this week) and pair it with a grey pencil skirt instead of the pants, and some equally awesome shoes. I'd wear anything with a pencil skirt, wouldn't I... (Yes, yes I would.)

Neo-Refinement Pullover - Anthropologie / Grey pencil skirt - Talbots / Handbag - Furla (via Filene's Basement)

I started watching Felicity from the beginning the other night. THIS is how I remember college, and I'm quite certain I had my very own Ben. I've been watching a few episodes each night while I blog before bed (replacing my nightly relationship with Frasier), but that really only stretches out the blogging much longer than necessary, and keeps me up much later than intended. It also wreaks havoc for any train of thought I might have had for a post (hence this particular topic). Maybe I should start a Felicity critique blog while I watch, and maybe Kimberly (who I know has also returned to the series) will join me? (Cue maniacal laughter.) I just hope our wardrobes don't become overrun with sad oversized sweaters as a result. My psyche will be overcome with all that angst and insecurity I'd be reliving as it is...

But back to this blog: I have 100 followers! Thank you dear readers old and new! While I know that number reflects only a portion of the success of this blog, it does mean a lot. Thank you for reading, for commenting, and for just being here! You have definitely become one of the reasons I get dressed everyday. =)

Tight Walk

Tuesday. Here we go. Three consecutive morning performances plus five consecutive evening performances equals no sleep, no me or Bobby-time, and lots of coffee. (Kona, baby!) This also means that planning outfits for the week is a must. I've got a working list all ready to go, but blog only knows if they'll work out as well as in my head. That's the one hinge that can either make or break my morning, that will keep me on time or make me unforgivably late.

Embellishment cardigan - Anthropologie / Cami - Banana Republic /
Denim pencil skirt - Lane Bryant / Mocha tights - We Love Colors / Shoes - Kenneth Cole

Today could have gone either way. I've been meaning to try an interpretation of green and turquoise together a la this pin. Wanting to participate in today's EBEW's Tight Challenge, I thought my mocha tights would be a great pairing. Well, the outfit sure didn't look anything like I wanted it to, so I ditched it and about 5 other attempts and went back to the drawing board. Since I had those chocolaty-smooth tights on already, I wanted to put together something else that would work but with minimal effort on my part. (I'd spent way too much time on the failed ensemble[s] already.) Cue a cardigan with saturated colors and lovely embellishment to do all the work for me.

Ring - Banana Republic (eBayed) / Necklace - The Limited / Earrings - Anthropologie /
Nail polish - "All Hail McQueen" (Butter London)

I've worn this lovely cardigan pretty similarly to that last time, but wanting to showcase the tights, I opted for some cute mary-janes instead of boots. Happy Tights Day, everyone!

Can't Get Enough

I think it's official, everyone: I'm addicted to stripes. The number of outfits in which I've incorporated them over the past couple weeks is kind of awesome ridiculous. But who can argue what a great, classic, neutral pattern they are? And though I have yet to pair them with the perfect red pencil skirt au classique, I'll continue to wear them with olive, which I love just as much, if not more.

It's a little unlike me not to include some pop of color with all these neutrals (red belt, coral ring, pink bag etc.), which is why I try to have varying textures (faux lizard belt and ostrich bag) or tones of colors (cognac boots vs. camel bag; white stripe vs. grey skinny belt) instead. It's a little more subtle, perhaps, but I've definitely come to appreciate it.

I hope everyone has a good Monday! Today begins my hell-week countdown to Thanksgiving break, so I'm mustering up all the strength, energy and positivity I possibly can! Let's get through it together, shall we?

Bluebell

You may have noticed, but I haven't had to get dressed up nearly as often as I did last year. With fewer events I need to attend, there are simply fewer reasons to don the pencil skirts and heels! So while I've had to flex my causal dressing muscle more than ever, and I think I've done pretty well, I sure do enjoy putting together fancy when I can.

Blouse - Banana Republic / Skirt - Talbots / Belt - Lane Bryant

This blue top has a sister in green, which was last worn here with lovely greys and tans. I really liked that particular belted/pencil skirt look (what a shocker, I know), so I wanted to reproduce it. I went with caramels, golds and tans for the blue version, introducing this new pencil skirt from Talbots in a delightfully well-below-knee length. It should not be at all shocking, either, that I have the skirt in charcoal as well.

Handbag - Furla (renting from BBOS)

But let's not ignore the obvious, now: yet again I wanted to "pump" of the volume with some fabulous animal print heels. And not just any animal print, the perfect leopard print! Since it's been all the rage this season, I was most certainly on the hunt for a pair of my own. I knew that I didn't want a pointy toe; I knew I didn't want a contrast platform pump. What I wanted was a larger print and rich camel background, a never-out-of style almond toe, and a conservative but still sexy heel (3" is conservative for me these days). What I really, really wanted were these gorgeous babies, but I just couldn't justify the price, no matter how hard I tried. Enter the Max Studio Marais from DSW and lots of rewards certificates. Though they were uncomfortably narrow when I first received them, they've stretched out nicely and are most definitely everything I wanted. And hot damn, I love them with this blue!

It's a Pattern

Do we see a pattern here? (Bwahahaha... pun intended.) I mean, can anyone ever get enough stripes? Especially when this new blue and pink version of mine can be so easily swapped into this outfit!

Double zip jacket - LOFT / Striped boatneck top - Banana Republic / Washed pencil skirt - Lane Bryant /
Tights ("Sugarberry") - Lane Bryant / Boots - Ciao Bella (via DSW - similar here!)

The main difference is the addition of the tights and boots, of course. Bob and I were planning to walk downtown for a light dinner, so I wanted to be sure I donned comfortable footwear and - since the nights have become quite chilly - warm tights. I was tickled pink giddy to find that these pink tights matched perfectly with the pink in the top! I thought it was just the right pop of color between the bland khaki skirt and the cognac boots. A darker brown belt brought all the colors together.

What I love most about the "formula" is how the three-quarter sleeves of the top peek out from the elbow sleeves of the jacket, how the large pseudo-portrait collar frames my face, how the the belt and pencil skirt define my shape, how I feel covered yet sexy at the same time. As much as I liked the original, I love the pop of pink and warmth of brown of this one even more. And I can't think of a better way to break out my favorite boots for the first time this fall!

Whimsy and Woe

This is [one of] the outfit[s] I wore today. I think I changed about 3 times and still ending up hating it. Okay, maybe "hate" is a strong word, but I just wasn't feeling the owl-tastic whimsy today. I probably didn't execute said whimsy as best I could have, but - meh.

Brown trapeze jacket - Lane Bryant / Owl tee - Old Navy / Gold cami - LOFT / Denim - Lane Bryant /
Necklace - Banana Republic / Purple heels - Nine West

What I'm really here to post about are my eShakti woes. After hearing so many fabulous things about them from all sorts of people, I thought I'd give them a try. I contacted them to see if they would be willing to send me an item gratis to review, and they graciously agreed. However, said item is still on its way to me since I needed to exchange for a different size. What I will say is that garment, albeit too small, is so far pretty nice. Once I get a size that fits, I think it'll be a great addition to my wardrobe, and I hope to share a favorable review when I do. But I'll have to save that review until then, eh?

What I'd like to present today are two items I purchased after I had received the first garment; I got the idea of size, fit, and possible customizations, was at least somewhat encouraged, and so I thought I'd purchase some others. I mean, they seem to have so many highly coveted pieces, and more than a handful quickly made my wishlist, so I wanted to get on that as soon as possible, yaknowwhadaimean? So here is what I purchased:

This dress caught my attention the minute it appeared. I loved the colors, the color blocking, the lines, and I thought the asymmetrical hem was a really neat feature that could be flattering and fun. I had it customized to a cap sleeve since I'd probably find a way to cover the arms up anyway. I was pretty darn excited about this dress and couldn't wait to get it.

When it finally arrived during my lunch break yesterday, I hastily opened the package and checked everything out. I wasn't planning to try everything right then and there, but I couldn't wait any longer! Well, the dress is, in a word, a mess. Yes, the colors are great; yes, the lines and blocking are REALLY flattering - the way they move and flow around the body keeps the eye moving and emphasizes a fantastic curve. The dress definitely requires the black belt to help break up the colors (though I thought it could have been bigger/longer), and it does so perfectly without taking away from the overall effect of the lines.

But that black section. Uff-da. I thought it would lay flat and form this nice little side drape. Nope, it is puckered at the hem and protrudes grotesquely from my hip. I couldn't think of a worse feature for this increasingly pear-shaped body of mine, and frankly I don't know how it would work on anyone with hips at all. (But someone please prove me wrong!) The side view is even worse, if possible - the lines point downward calling all sorts of attention to the stomach/butt area. Yikes. The hem itself is also unfinished, and the material is a flimsy, cheap cotton blend - it looks very sloppy and even disjointed from the rest of the otherwise clean lines of the look. It just think this unique feature was not designed and executed as well as it could have been. And that alone negates any other desirable features of the dress.

Bob's reaction to the dress pretty accurately captures my feelings about it as well. When he first saw me in it (he always goes to the boobs first), he ooohed; as his eyes traveled downward, his face started to contort. Exactly.

Blech. I think I blame myself for not knowing my body shape better to talk myself out if it beforehand. Had I found it at a brick and mortar store, it would have certainly been one of the pieces I eagerly took to the fitting room, but I would have immediately vetoed it as soon as I got it on. But therein lies the problem with online shopping. This dress is, needless to say, going back.

This skirt is just too darn cute and I had to have it. I love the precious little red bows and couldn't wait to wear it with a crisp white shirt, tights and ballet flats. Coming from a girl who almost exclusively wears pencil skirts and heels, I should have seen the red flag right then and there.

I requested a customization to extend the length past the knee and to add pockets. (Yes! Pocketsssss!) It wasn't an option listed on the website, but I included it as a note with the order, so I was thrilled to see that they accommodated my request! The wide, contoured waistband is a nice touch, the material is thick and fully lined - even a little luxe - and the hand embroidery really is darling. However, it became clear to me that full skirts like this are, in my opinion, not meant to be any longer than above-knee. Any longer than that and you just create a marmish, frumpy frock. And so it was.

As you can see, too, the side seams of the skirt are poorly sewn, creating this weird exaggeration of an a-line shape, which is not what I wanted either. It looks like the corners are pinched in, or something. Just bad construction, I think. I briefly thought that maybe I could salvage it by taking in those seams and reworking it into a straight/pencil skirt. (And by "I" I mean a tailor.) See? Better for my shape already.

However, I’m just going return it. Forcing a cutesy pattern like this into a pencil skirt makes it seem even more frumptacular to me, and it doesn't seem at all my style.

I think I’m going to choose for the gift certification option with the return, which gets me 20% more back. This will cover the return shipping fee (a flat $6.50) and will encourage me to give them one more try with something that better suits my shape and style. Like I said, my first garment, full review forthcoming, has quite a bit of promise!

I have learned my lesson.

And So It Goes

This sweater is a fussy bugger. It's supposed to be a sleeved poncho, which I know I'll appreciate on lazy weekends with cuffed jeans or jeggings, but it is otherwise a big ol' tent. I thought I'd try belting it to give it some shape, but this is effective only as long as I don't move my arms - it reveals its poncho-ness (ponchitude?) with those gaping sides. I do like the scalloped effect that results, but it sure does like to ride up more often than not.

Linen blend poncho/sweater - TJ Maxx / Grey ponte skirt - eBayed / Camisole - Anthropologie /
Skinny gold belt - Talbots / Sandals - Nine West / Handbag - Furla (renting via BBOS)

Since I love to pair green with grey, I thought this top would work well with my funky zipper back pencil skirt - last worn with green as well! (I didn't capture a picture of the back of this outfit because my backside is not my best side of the fussy riding-up-issue aforementioned.) Needing more accessorizing especially at the neckline, I added this new clustered necklace of mine. It's definitely one of those that doesn't "match" but "goes" - the color palette works with the colors in the outfit overall, and it has just the right amount of bulk that it balances out the volume of the top.

Ring - Ruche / Necklace - Ruche / Earrings - Maurices

In other, but related, news, I need to experiment with other indoor photo locations in the new place. This narrow white door is quickly becoming a bore, and it's not even winter yet!
